Jamshedpur, 25th September 2026: CSIR–National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML), Jamshedpur, organized a One-Day Student Visit Programme under the JIGYASA Programme for the students of Classes XI and XII of Tarapore School, Agrico, Jamshedpur. A total of 79 students (41 girls and 38 boys) were led by 4 faculty members including Mrs. Chanchal Sharma and Mrs. Pamela Verma. The programme was organized with the objective of promoting scientific awareness and providing students the exposure to scientific research and innovation especially in the field of minerals, metals and materials. The event commenced with an inaugural address by Dr. S. Sivaprasad, Senior Most Chief Scientist and Head, MTE Division. He encouraged the students to develop a scientific temperament, remain curious and continuously explore new ideas.

The participants were welcomed by Dr. K. Gopala Krishna, Scientist-G and Head, IMDC who delivered an insightful talk on the applications of various metallic materials and highlighted their evolution and technological advancements over the decades. He emphasized the significant role of metals and alloys in shaping modern engineering, industry and everyday life.

Subsequently, Dr. Animesh Jana, Scientist-E, delivered an informative presentation on CSIR and its network of laboratories across the country. He introduced the students to the diverse research activities carried out in various CSIR laboratories, particularly at CSIR-NML and highlighted the opportunities available for young learners interested in science and innovation.

A key highlight of the programme was the interaction of students with scientists and their exposure to the research environment at CSIR-NML through visits to various laboratory facilities. The programme concluded with a Popular Lecture delivered by Shri. Jay Shankar Sharan, Controller of Administration (COA), CSIR-NML, on "Swachhta Hi Seva 2026". Following the lecture, a science quiz competition was conducted, in which the students enthusiastically participated.

The students and faculty members appreciated the opportunity to interact with scientists and gain first-hand exposure to scientific research beyond the classroom. The programme successfully inspired the young participants to explore careers in science, technology, and innovation.
