Ranchi : The state government has issued a fresh ban order on renting out stadiums for non-sport activities.
State sports director Ranendra Kumar said the sports department would not allow any further violations. "We are going to publicise this fresh ban order now so that everybody gets to know about it. Grounds are meant for players and it should be allowed only for games," he said, referring to the order issued on Thursday by Sports Authority of Jharkhand functioning under the department.
The rule was introduced for the first time after the 34th National Games in 2011 but was seldom followed. Stadiums, both at the iconic mega sports complex in Hotwar and at Morabadi and Namkum, often hosted non-sport events ranging from marriage functions to DJ nights and conferences to trade fairs.
Of all the stadiums, Birsa Munda football stadium in Morabadi has always been the worst hit because of its central location. There have been many instances when both government and non-government entities have blatantly defied the restrictions. Even sports department officials did not hesitate to issue permits.
