Tragedy struck the hills of Jorapahari on Thursday morning, when five people, including three women and three men, were killed and 15 others were injured as an overloaded private Smarat travel bus swerved off the road and fell into a 10 feet–deep gorge in the remote place under the Muffasil police station of Giridih district. The mishap which took place at Jorapahari on Dumari road, 5 km from Giridih town at 10 am on Thursday morning when the driver was trying to negotiate a curve and the bus went down the gorge, said IPS trainee, Ansuman Kumar of Muffasil police station.
The six deceased have been identified as Rukmini Devi and her two daughters Lali Kumar and Munni Kumari and other four were identified as Santos Giri a resident of Bermo Baleshwar Prasad Yadav belonging to Bandarkuppi village and Vijay Thakur of Paharidih area of Giridih district. The bus Smarat bus, which was carrying passengers at Bokaro, was coming to Giridih when it skidded off the road and rolled down the gorge, Trainee IPS officer Ansuman Kumar told The Pioneer. When six people died on the spot and over dozen passengers were admitted in the local hospital, he said.
Local Muffasil police rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation under the supervision of IPS trainee with the help of locals. The condition of the rest of the injured passengers who were were admitted to local private nursing home by the police and the local residents is stated to be critical. Most of the passengers sustained serious head injuries.
